Best Running Books & Movies

I read everything I can get my hands on related to my passions. Here are my top books and movies in no particular order.  Feel free to add your favorites in the comment section.

Technical Running Books

Jack Daniels Running Formula, 2nd ed–my running bible
Alberto Salazar’s Guide to Road Racing–great tips and stories
Advanced Marathoning, Peter Pfitzinger 2nd ed.–a book for serious marathoners
Performance Nutrition for Runners, Matt Fitzgerald–REALLY good book about fueling your body before, during, after
Brain Training for Runners, Matt Fitzgerald–still reading

Fast Track, Suzy Favor

Racing Weight, How to get Lean for Peak Performance–  Best book Matt Fitzgerald has written yet!!  DO get this book!

Non Fiction “Stories”

Born to Run, Chris McDougall

Running With The Buffalos, Chris Lear

Sub 4:00-Alan Webb, Chris Lear

Best Fiction
Once a Runner, John Parker–GREAT book about running.  Spot on descriptions of how we crazy runners think and why we do it 🙂

Marathon, Hal HigdonNEW…I can’t wait! Reading now…not impressed.  A very slow read, can’t get into it.  Maybe it’s because Hal doesn’t usually write fiction, I don’t know, but it is not a page turner yet.  Hopefully it improves. I’ll keep you posted.

Best Movies

Fire on the Track-The Steve Prefontaine Story

Running Brave

Showdown: Five Elite Distance Runners, One Dream

Without Limits

one word of caution when reading different books about training programs. Always pick one that suits you best and do that one only. Don’t try to piece together parts of several. It loses the structure.

I’d add Murakami’s book and The Spirit of the Marathon documentary…

    Cool list.

Definitely looking to pick up some non-fiction books to get more images ready for times where I feel tired or feel like giving up. I use my own images from my experiences but there’s using movies definitely will help!
